This week at SXSW saw the world premiere of The Accountant 2, with Ben Affleck returning as everyone’s favorite autistic mathematician/hitman. It took nearly a decade for the sequel to arrive, and now with the film slated to hit theaters next month, director Gavin O’Connor is confirming that it’s not the last we’ll see of Christian Wolff.
Speaking with Collider, O’Connor revealed that The Accountant 2 is the second chapter of a planned trilogy with the third film on the way…
“I told [Affleck], ‘We should make this a trilogy. So what’s the middle chapter?’ That became The Accountant 2, exactly as we envisioned it. And now, we have The Accountant 3 on the way. We’ve been now kicking the tires on what that story is. So, we’ll be doing that next.”
But will it take nearly as long for us to see the story wrapped up? O’Connor talked about a third movie back in 2021 and the idea for it sounded a lot like what The Accountant 2 turned out to be, focusing on the brothers played by Affleck and Jon Bernthal.
The sequel stars Affleck alongside Bernthal, JK Simmons, Daniella Pineda, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson.
The Accountant arrived in 2016 (!!!) and was a hit for O’Connor and Affleck, coming out of nowhere to earn $155M worldwide on a modest $44M budget. Not only that, but it was the most-rented movie for the entire year. The sequel cost about as much, so it should do well when Amazon MGM releases it on April 25th. So far, critic reviews have been strong with the film holding an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
