With Kraven the Hunter hitting theaters this week, now would be the time to start looking ahead to what’s next for Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs. Well, as of today there’s absolutely nothing on the horizon, at least not on the big screen. And according to a new report from TheWrap, there’s a very good explanation for that.
Following Kraven the Hunter, Sony Pictures is reportedly giving up on Marvel Spider-Man spinoffs…for now. The cinematic universe they tried to establish with a trio of Venom movies, Morbius, and Madame Web has been a box office disaster, and that’s being kind. The most successful was 2018’s Venom which earned a healthy $856M. But it was at least partially due to audience curiosity because the numbers have dwindled ever since.
Instead, Sony will focus its attention on the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies they produce in partnership with Marvel Studios. There’s also the Prime Video series Spider-Noir, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, a continuation of that Oscar-winning franchise.
Sony wants to try and take advantage of the Spider-Man rights it holds by, shocker, focusing on projects with Spider-Man actually in them. Seems like a wise move, doesn’t it?That’s what these execs get paid the big bucks for!
