‘Spider-Man 4’ Is Reportedly “Still A Long Way” From Shooting Due To Script Problems

So, Spider-Man 4 is rarin’ to go, right? Tom Holland is cool with the script and the story and Destin Daniel Cretton is ready to direct. Shooting in mid-2025, right? Well, maybe not so fast. Rumors have been running wild that the story isn’t set and the screenplay isn’t where it needs to be, causing something of a rift between Holland and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. The situation might be worse than we thought.

As usual, take this with a grain of salt, but scooper Daniel Richtman says shooting on Spider-Man 4 “is still a long way from starting production” with a finalized shooting draft not ready yet.

The report adds… “With sky-high expectations following the success of No Way Home, Feige and Sony felt the pressure to step up their game and deliver something even better. I hear the writing team is hard at work reworking the plot to address these issues and improve the story.”

This movie has been a source of turmoil since the beginning, with Feige reportedly clashing with Sony’s Tom Rothman about what approach to take. Feige is said to want the Multiverse aspects toned down (which makes sense given the unpopularity of them), while Rothman see the $1.6B Spider-Man: No Way Home earned and wants to capitalize on that. Whoever wins out in this fight could go a long way in deciding if we see Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire return.

Any delays could be problematic, as Holland also has filming on Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, around the same time. His role in that is not expected to be huge, though, as Matt Damon is the lead.

Holland said in a recent interview that he wants to protect the franchise’s legacy which is why the story has to be right… “We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect. The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing.”

Spider-Man 4 opens in theaters on July 24th 2026.
