Here’s a rumor to take with a grain of salt, while also crossing our fingers that it’s at least somewhat true. According to scooper My Time to Shine Hello, Marvel Studios is eyeing an Excalibur series based on the England-based X-Men squad. There have been loads of rumors over the years about a way to bring Captain Britain into the MCU. Could this be how they do it?
No further details are available, of course, and it isn’t even specified live-action or animated. Presumably, this is for live-action. Excalibur was the creation of X-Men writer Chris Claremont and artist Alan Davis. The England-based X-Men team consisted of Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat (with her pet dragon Lockheed), Rachel Summers aka Phoenix, and Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler, along with Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain, Betsy Braddock aka Psylocke, and the elemental shapeshifter Meggan. Other teammates, many of them extraterrestrials, came in and out of the series.
The comic underwent a lot of changes due to low sales, but when most people think of Excalibur they think of the earliest, most fun version which consisted of time travel and alternate reality hijinks.
Previous rumors have pegged Guy Ritchie to direct a Captain Britain and the Black Knight movie. This story got a boost following Kit Harington’s debut as Black Knight in Eternals, but nothing has been heard about that character since. Henry Cavill has been a popular choice to play Brian Braddock, for obvious reasons. They look like they could be brothers. It helps that Ritchie is apparently a fan, telling THR back in 2021…
“However, I have the internet and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”
What do you think? Should Marvel pursue an Excalibur live-action series? And what about Cavill as Captain Britain?
