Before he embarks on a final impossible mission, Ving Rhames has a different fight ahead of him. Rhames stars in the boxing drama Uppercut, in which he plays a former boxing champion who agrees to mentor a promising young female fighter.
Like most dramas set inside the squared circle, the aspiring champ feels they’ve been alone fighting against the world already. Luiii (aka Luise Grossman) plays Toni, a resilient young boxer who strikes up a partnership with Rhames’ Elliott, whose best days are behind him but he’s willing to pass down his knowledge of the sweet science to Toni and take her to the championship.
The film marks the English-language debut from German writer/director Torsten Ruether. Ruether is remaking his own 2021 film, Leberhaken, which also starred Luiii.
Also in the cast are Jordan E. Cooper and Joanna Cassidy.
Uppercut looks to throw some haymakers when it hits theaters, digital, and On Demand on February 28th 2025 via Lionsgate.
