- The Wild Robot (review)- $35M
Dreamworks has landed another animated hit with The Wild Robot. Both a critical and audience favorite, the emotional journey of a lost robot in the wild earned $35M domestically, above expectations, and $53M worldwide. Not a gigantic hit, but a solid one that could have long legs for the rest of the season as the family-friendly offerings are slight.
2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice– $16M/$250.1M
3. Transformers One– $9.3M/$39.1M
Paramount’s critically-acclaimed origin Transformers One disappoints again in week two, falling 62% and earning just $9.3M. Worldwide the film does have $71M but that’s not a good number for those hoping for a sequel. There was some thought it might take away from The Wild Robot but that obviously didn’t happen.
4. Devara Pt. 1– $5.6M
5. Speak No Evil– $4.3M/$28.1M
6. Megalopolis (review)- $4M
Here’s the idea: Francis Ford Coppola’s Roman epic Megalopolis was unlikely to ever be a gigantic box office hit. That’s what made his $100M personal investment so shocking. When the film debuted to mixed (and I’m being generous there) response, followed by a real struggle to land distribution, hope dwindled even further. But $4M is still astonishingly low for the star-driven film led by Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, and Aubrey Plaza. Lost in this news is that Megalopolis is yet another flop for distributor Lionsgate, which is having one of the worst stretches of its existence.
7. Deadpool & Wolverine– $2.6M/$631.2M
After ten weeks, Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine has $1.3B globally, one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.
8. My Old Ass (review)- $2.22M/$2.8M
Expanding to national release in over 1300 theaters, the indie comedy My Old Ass earned $2.2M for $2.8M after three weeks. The second Aubrey Plaza film in the top 10 this week, stars Maisy Stella as a young woman navigating love and life with the help of her future self.
9. Never Let Go– $2.2M/$8.2M
10. The Substance– $1.8M/$6.8M
