James Gunn’s DCU launch is right around the corner, not with next year’s Superman, but with the adult animated series Creature Commandos. Max has now confirmed the show will premiere on December 5th, with one episode arriving weekly until January 16th 2025.
Written and exec-produced by Gunn, Creature Commandos features a top secret government team of monsters recruited to take on dangerous missions. Think the Suicide Squad but with monsters. They’re even led by Amanda Waller and voiced by Viola Davis who has played her in the live-action Suicide Squad films and Peacemaker. Their field commander is Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo. Flag is the father of Joel Kinnaman’s character from the live-action films. Flag will also appear in Superman and Peacemaker season two, which could make this series very interesting for him.
Also in the cast are Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, and Indira Varma as The Bride.
Speaking with EW, Gunn talked about what fans can look forward to from Creature Commandos as well as the DCU as a whole. He
“The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman. It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.”
Gunn also wants people to know that he’s not just rehasing what he did with Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel Studios, saying “I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos. That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”
Finally, Gunn says Creature Commandos is just a small taste of what’s to come in the DCU.
“Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like. There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”
