‘Frozen’ Director Confirms Next Two Films Are Being Made At The Same Time

At Disney’s recent D23 Expo, it was learned that Frozen III would have a new release date sometime in 2027. After initially being set for 2026, the reason for the delay was never made clear. But in a new Fandango interview with director and Disney Animation’s chief creative officer Jennifer Lee, a pretty good reason was given and it involves the huge story they’re trying to tell.

Lee revealed that Frozen III and Frozen IV are being made at the same time. At D23, a huge story in need of two films was teased, and so Lee’s news makes a lot of sense when seen in that context.

“We are working on ‘Frozen IV’ at the same time. So, we’re working in a room where this half is ‘Frozen III,’ this half is ‘Frozen IV,’ we’re standing in the middle going back and forth,” she said.

“We are not even fully scripted yet; we’re in early scripting, so it’s too soon to know where the musical language will go,” Lee continued.

Previously, Lee had dropped some clues about the plot of both movies and the questions that still need to be answered…

“One of those questions is… ‘Who gave Elsa her powers?’ And another question is, ‘What happened to Hans?’ But we put up a lot of questions that will be answered. And that’s only the first page of questions [that the films will reckon with].”

The two Frozen films have combined for $2.7B globally, but more than that they reinvigorated Disney animation which had been in a slump for years. There’s every reason to believe the franchise will continue to be gigantic going into these next two chapters.

Frozen III hits theaters on November 24th 2027.
