‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: Shawn Levy On How “The Cavillrine” Became A Reality

So many great cameos and fun nods to X-Men lore help make Deadpool & Wolverine the most enjoyable Marvel film in years. While there are literally dozens of different Deadpools that show up, there are also quite a few Wolvies. As Wade searches for a new “anchor being” to save his world, he meets many different Wolverines including Patch, the Age of Apocalypse version, and even the Logan who was sacrificed by the Reavers on a giant “X”. But the one that had fans buzzing the most was…the Cavillrine!

The former Man of Steel and Justice League star Henry Cavill had a hilarious cameo as a totally jacked Wolverine who wasn’t taking any shit from Deadpool, kicking his ass immediately. I guess this is technically Cavill’s MCU debut, but for now it’s likely to be his only appearance there. Hey, draft a petition if you want him back! Marvel loves those.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Shawn Levy talked about how he and Ryan Reynolds came up with the scene featuring the Cavillrine, and how they convinced Cavill to do it. Doesn’t sound like it took much arm-twisting.

“That’s another example where Ryan and I are sitting there writing and we literally pass the laptop back and forth between us. I feel like all of that stuff had gone down with DC early on during the writing and we were like, ‘We’ve got to do this. We want to see Cavill as the Cavillrine.’ So, another text, another quick yes, boom, he was in.”

“[Henry] did enjoy that day, though I remember he was so committed and jacked up…and he had that disgusting cigar in his mouth for hours. He was fully in it. I think he might have gotten sick to his stomach if memory serves,” Levy continued. “It was a combination of oxygenated muscles and no actual oxygen going up into his nose. He was a trooper and he was fabulous.”

Clearly, Cavill had a blast doing it and the only thing he had to sacrifice was his mustache.
