Whoa! The Russo Brothers In Talks To Direct Next Two ‘Avengers’ Movies

The Russo Brothers never swore they were done with Marvel. Sure, they directed four MCU films including the massive Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame before going off to launch their own production company. but Marvel was always just a call away. And that call has now been made.

According to THR, Joe and Anthony Russo are in talks to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. Whoa!! This is gigantic news that fans are likely to go nuts about, and for good reason. The Russos made a name for themselves with Captain America: The Winter Soldier (still my favorite MCU movie) and never looked back, directing Captain America: Civil War and the aforementioned Avengers films, both among the highest-grossing of all time.

More good news, the Russos could be reteaming with the writing duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote all of their Marvel hits. That part is unconfirmed, so don’t take it as gospel just yet. It just seems unlikely the Russos would come back without their creative partners in this.

And to be clear, Marvel Studios NEEDS the Russos right now. Avengers 5 has been a disaster thus far, following the exit of Kang actor Jonathan Majors and the departure of director Destin Daniel Cretton. The film has seen a number of writers take a shot with little success, while Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy has been heavily rumored to take over as director.

Expect more news to drop next week at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel is bringing the big guns to Hall H.

Avengers 5 is set for May 1st, 2026, and Secret Wars will be released on May 7th, 2027.
