Dubbed “the queen of the beach reads”, author Elin Hilderbrand’s series of Nantucket-based romance novels are primed to be the next big adaptations out of Hollywood. Netflix is getting on the action first with The Perfect Couple, based on Hilderbrand’s first murder mystery, and starring an all-star cast led by Nicole Kidman who just can’t stay away from prestige TV right now.
Created by showrunner Jenna Lamia (My Best Friend’s Exorcism) with episodes directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box), The Perfect Couple follows a woman whose marriage into a wealthy Nantucket family gets postponed when a body washed up on the beach.
Kidman stars as the groom’s mother, a famous novelist who disapproves of her son’s choice of bride. She’s joined in the cast by Eve Hewson, Liev Schreiber, Billy Howle, Dakota Fanning, Ishaan Khatter, Sam Nivola, Michael Beach, Donna Lynne Champlin, Omar Epps, Mia Isaac and Isabelle Adjani. Great to see Adjani again as the French legend mostly works in her home country nowadays.
Hildebrand’s popularity could set her as the next Tom Clancy or Nicholas Sparks as authors who become movie franchises unto themselves. Netflix certainly hopes so, and they’ll stream The Perfect Couple on September 5th.
