If there are two things that definitely go together it’s Christmas…and vampires. There have been more of them than you might think (check out Guillermo Del Toro’s Cronos), but the next great one could come this year with Nosferatu, the long-awaited fourth movie from The Northman, The Witch, and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers.
Eggers is set to turn the holidays red with Nosferatu, a remake of the classic 1922 horror that is based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Bill Skarsgard takes on yet another creepy role as Count Orlok, a terrifying vampire who has become infatuated with a young woman from a small village.
That woman is played by Lily-Rose Depp, who is joined in the cast by Nicholas Hoult (hoping to make us forget Renfield), Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe, naturally.
Here’s the brief synopsis: Robert Eggers’ NOSFERATU is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
Focus Features is taking a gamble by putting Nosferatu on Christmas Day, a time usually reserved for family films and studio blockbusters. Obviously, they see a wealth of potential in counterprogramming, so let’s see how that pays off.
