- Bad Boys: Ride or Die (review)- $56M
And the bad boys just keep on ridin’. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die kicked the summer into overdrive with $56M domestic, and $107M globally. The number is the best for an R-rated film since Oppenheimer in 2023. This was something of a gamble for Sony, who invested $100M in the 30-year-old franchise and in Smith, who was a high-risk star after the infamous slap heard around the world. Bad Boys remains remarkably consistent as fans love the duo of Smith and Lawrence, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
2. The Garfield Movie– $10M/$68.6M
3. IF– $8M/$93.5M
4. The Watchers (review)- $7M
The name Shyamalan can only carry so much weight, apparently. The Watchers, the feature directorial debut of M. Night Shaymalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan, opened with a dismal $7M domestic in over 3000 theaters. Reviews have been harsh toward the Dakota Fanning-led thriller about four strangers trapped in a cabin where creatures lurk outside. Both critics and audiences alike came away disappointed (as did I), and that makes things interesting for when M. Night’s next film, Trap, arrives this August.
5. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes– $5.4M/$149.7M
At $149.7M, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has bested the $146M domestic total of War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017. The film now has a global cume of $359M.
6. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga– $4.2M/$58.7M
7. The Fall Guy– $2.7M/$85.1M
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring- $2.4M/$317.9M
Fathom Events re-released Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy into theaters and fans couldn’t wait to return to Middle-Earth. The three combined films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, earned $6.2M domestic in just over 1500 screens.
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers– $1.9M/$342.9M
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King– $1.8M/$377M
