A lot of questions remain about the future of Paramount Pictures, but the studio is still looking to pump out as many sure-fire hits as they can. And after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, they want to see if keeping Miles Teller as a Navy officer is a path to box office success. Deadline reports Teller will star in a remake of the 1982 classic, An Officer and a Gentleman.
Teller will suit up in the Naval uniform once again to star in the film, which has a script by The Lost City writer Dana Fox, based on an earlier draft by Matt Johnson. The original movie centered on a loner who attempts to complete his Navy Officer training while being put to the paces by a tough-as-nails drill sergeant. He also falls in love with a local townie.
An Officer and a Gentleman was a box office and critical hit, with star-making turns by Richard Gere and Debra Winger, the latter earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination, and an Oscar-winning performance by Louis Gossett Jr., the first African-American to win in the Best Supporting Actor category. Taylor Hackford directed the film which went on to earn $190M.
As if Teller doesn’t already have enough on his plate with Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge, a film he stars in with Anya Taylor-Joy. He also has the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, and the A24 rom-com Eternity with Elizabeth Olsen. Of course, he’ll also hit the cockpit once again for a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise.
