Kathryn Bigelow has been directing movies since 1981, and yet in all of that time she’s only completed ten. That’s not a knock on her at all; some projects fell through or change hands (like Triple Frontier did), but the main reason is that she’s very picky about what she takes on, and then does tons of research beforehand. Her last three films, The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, and Detroit (seven years ago!!!), were impeccably researched and resourced, The wait is always worth it. And now, Bigelow may have another film in the works.
According to Puck, Bigelow is set to direct a political thriller for Netflix that will follow the White House response to ballistic missiles being launched at the United States. The script is by Noah Oppenheim, known for the acclaimed Natalie Portman drama, Jackie, The Maze Runner, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant.
I’m curious if this film will have any connection to another Oppenheim project for Netflix, a political thriller series titled Zero Day that was to star Robert De Niro as a former U.S. President. Could it have been refashioned into a movie?
Bigelow was also attached to Netflix project that has fallen by the wayside. Aurora was to center on a global power outage and and two siblings dealing with the crisis in very different ways. Netflix canceled the film, ultimately, but not before Bigelow exited the project.
