‘Godzilla x Kong’ Director Adam Wingard Is Taking A Breather From The Monsterverse

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard is taking a breather from the Monsterverse. THR reports Wingard won’t return to direct the film’s sequel. He also previously directed 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and can be credited with taking Legendary’s franchise to the next level in terms of accolades and box office.

The split was amicable, and the given reason is one that we already knew about going in. Wingard hopes to complete his original A24 film Onslaught first before going back to big studio blockbusters, and Legendary would rather not wait around. So it’s conceivable that he will be back and guiding some future clash between King Kong and Godzilla or some other cinematic Titan. His last original movie was 2014’s The Guest.

Without Wingard, the Godzilla x Kong sequel only has Shang-Chi writer Dave Callaham aboard on the creative side. Wingard was an unexpected choice, having mostly directed horror movies and indie thrillers up to that point. But he fit right in, and Legendary could look to find a filmmaker from a similar background. Perhaps they’ll even seek his recommendation?

And what are the chances Wingard comes back for a Son of Kong movie? Expect news on a replacement to arrive soon.
