Although Sony/Marvel haven’t confirmed anything, a sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to happen, and possibly begin production this fall. But as of right now, there is no director attached to it as Jon Watts, director of the three previous movies, has moved on. Loads of rumors have swirled about potential replacements, and now World of Reel adds Sam Raimi into the mix.
Raimi, who obviously directed three Spider-Man movies for Sony during the Tobey Maguire era, and recently Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has been a fan-favorite choice for months. Other contenders, Justin Lin of the Fast & Furious franchise, and Daredevil‘s Drew Goddard, have joined other projects that will eat up all of their time.
Other names said to be in contention are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), and Jon Favreau, who helped launch the MCU with Iron Man in 2008. He’s directing The Mandalorian & Grogu movie for Lucasfilm, so who knows about that one. It’s worth noting that Daley and Goldstein wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming so they are closely attached to the franchise already.
Raimi is also busy, with horror film Send Help on his dance card. But that also seems like a project that could be pushed aside if he inks a deal to direct Spider-Man. He’s also been rumored to be in the mix to direct Avengers: Secret War. Whatever happens, expect an update soon. Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker, of course, but it’s unclear what direction the film will take and who else might join him.
