It took Disney nearly fifteen years, but a third chapter in the Tron saga is finally coming. Tron: Ares will be led by Jared Leto, with Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Cameron Monaghan, Hasan Minhaj, and Evan Peters joining him. These are all brand-new stars to the franchise, but what about the guy who started it all? That would be Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn/Clu, who led the original 1982 Tron and played a supporting role in 2010’s Tron: Legacy.
According to Bridges while speaking with FilmComment, he will be returning to The Grid in Tron: Ares. But of course, he’s tight-lipped about his role as plot details remain a mystery…
“I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the ‘Tron’ story; I’m excited about that. It’s wild. Jared Leto is the star of this third one, and I’m really anxious to work with him, and I’ve admired his work.”
It’s unclear if he’ll be alone, or if we might see Garrett Hedlund return as Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn, or Olivia Wilde as the evolving algorithm Quorra. Last we saw, the two of them had escaped into the real world. I can’t believe a thread like that will be disregarded. It’s likely that Sam’s actions, and his likely takeover of ENCOM, will lead directly into this new story.
