‘CODA’ Makes History At SAG Awards 2022, Taking Top Acting Honor

It was a history making night at the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards, which honors the best performances of the year in movies and television. Winning Best Ensemble on the film side was the heartwarming musical comedy, CODA, a film that has been charming audiences since its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. It became the first film with a cast that is predominantly deaf to win the Best Ensemble award. Also, deaf actor Troy Kotsur, who has looked like an Oscars frontrunner all year, won Best Supporting Actor.

In what could be a sign of things to come, Will Smith won Best Actor for his lead performance in King Richard. Also, Jessica Chastain won for her perfect portrayal of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Surprise of the night may have gone to the cast of Korean hit series Squid Game, which saw two members of its cast, Jung Ho-yeon and Lee Jung-jae, defeat some stiff competition in the Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series categories. They become the first winners in this category from a non-English speaking series.
