‘Captain America: Brave New World’ First Look: Anthony Mackie Steps Up To Reform The Avengers

After a tough 2023, Marvel Studios hopes to rebound in 2024 with Deadpool & Wolverine, the only movie on the docket this year. But after that, the MCU will pick up and earnest. And what better way to do that than with a new Captain America movie? Anthony Mackie sports the shield in Captain America: Brave New World, and EW has some new images from the anticipated superhero film.

According to information from Marvel’s presentation at CinemaCon, and Mackie himself, Sam Wilson’s first job as Captain America is to reform the Avengers. He’s given the task by General Thunderbolt Ross, now played by Harrison Ford, who has been elected President of the United States. When a mysterious team of super-soldiers attacks Ross, Captain America has a new mission on his hands.

“This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be,” Mackie said. “I think with these movies, you’re getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

While you won’t see a reunion with Captain America’s pal the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), another character from their Disney+ series will be acting as sidekick. Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquin Torres aka Falcon, a techie and former military man similar to Wilson. Carl Lumbly also returns as Isaiah Bradley, an African-American super soldier and one of the first to be experimented on with the serum.

Shira Haas joins the MCU as Israeli superhero Ruth aka Sabra. A popular character in the comics who is most closely associated with the X-Men, it’ll be very interesting to see her evolution. And coming back to the MCU after long layoffs are Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader and Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, both last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14th 2025.
