- Challengers (review)- $15M
Positive critical response and word of mouth coupled with the star power of 1/2 of Hollywood’s most adorable young couple ensured a first place finish for the film about saucy tennis pros, Challengers which managed to lead the effort in knocking Civil War from a fourth week in the top spot.
2. Unsung Hero – $7.75M
Once again we have a top ten featuring a faith based film. Hollywood is taking note of audiences want for these films as this week’s #2, a film about a mom who inspires her family with her faith, was released by Lionsgate which is a break from these films being released only by Angel studios or one of a few other minor studios that focus on faith.
3. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire– $7.2M/$181.6M
4. Civil War – $7M/$56.1M
5. Abigail – $5.25M/$18.7M
6. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare – $3.8M/$15.4M
This is just really disappointing. An awesome, silly, action film starring some of the biggest names in blow ’em up and not only does it’s opening weekend disappoint but it’s second week has the biggest drop of any film on the top 10 losing 56% of its audience. I’ll tell you one thing, if The Fall Guy doesn’t kill next weekend you can all but bet on streaming to be the default release arena for action movies from now on.
7. Kung Fu Panda 4– $3.5M/$184.9M
8. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – $3.25M/$107.3M
9. Dune: Part Two – $1.9M/$279.7M
10. Boy Kills World (review) – $1.6M
Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it looks for the Bill Skarsgard led action flick Boy Kills World, the film is doing a slower rollout then the other new releases on this weeks top 10 showing up in only 1993 theaters as opposed to 3,477 for this weeks top film. Again though, without a strong showing this will be yet another mark against theatrical releases for mid-budget action films.
