I have learned not to bet against post Green Lantern Ryan Reynolds, I honestly can’t think of a single thing he’s done since then that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. That being said, the initial trailers for his (and writer/director John Krasinski’s) upcoming animated film IF had me nervous. Reynolds is alot like salt, the right amount will make anything taste better but too much and….well, you get the point. I’ve done a full 180 after seeing this final trailer for IF, which puts more emphasis on the role of Cailey Fleming (that darling Judith Grimes from The Walking Dead) who seems ready and able to balance out all the Reynolds.
IF imagines a world where imaginary friends are real, and are sadly discarded once their kid grows up or doesn’t need them anymore. Yeah…real bummer way to frame a movie, BUT if you add in the aforementioned Reynolds and Fleming, then sprinkle it with amazing voice talent like Steve Carrell, Louis Gossett Jr. (RIP), Matt Damon, Jon Stewart, and Sebastian Manascalco (ok, he’s not as big of a name but you can’t tell me his voice wasn’t made for this kind of work), and that frown quickly turns upside down.
The only downside to IF appears to be Reynolds wardrobe, don’t get me wrong he looks cool as a cucumber but the problem is it could bring back that hipster 1920s look when everyone else thinks that THEY will look that cool too.
