Cassian Andor’s story has already been written. Going into season one of Andor, we already knew what the fate would be for Diego Luna’s cynical rebel spy, and it’s been no secret that showrunner Tony Gilroy planned for the series to lead right up to the start of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But now, thanks to an interview with Empire about season two, we know just how close it will get.
Luna and Gilroy confirmed that the last three episodes of Andor‘s second and final season will take place during the three days prior to Rogue One. As we know, that film comprises Andor’s final mission for the Rebel Alliance, stealing the Death Star schematics, with everyone on that mission meeting their demise.
The second season will always have a vastly different narrative structure, with storylines comprised of three-episode arcs that cover a year of time leading up to Rogue One and Star Wars: A New Hope.
Season one of Andor was incredible, arguably the most acclaimed Star Wars series on Disney+. That puts a ton of expectations on this next season to measure up, but Gilroy and Luna are ready to take that challenge.
“The risks this season will take are very different,” Luna said.
“In every way,” added Gilroy. “Look, man, I’m not trying to make a career here; if anything I’m on the downhill side of a long career. But this is an opportunity. This is 1,500 pages of the most dynamic material in these people’s lives to deal with. We got it right the first time, and you don’t want to let your foot off the gas.”
“Some of [the Rebel Alliance’s] core ingredients are secrecy and paranoia and lack of trust and betrayal. So, how difficult is it to build a revolution?” Gilroy teased. “And what happens to the original gangsters, as other people get involved?”
The cool thing about Andor is that it has set up so much that its characters can evolve and grow long after Cassian’s gone. The Star Wars universe has never felt so fleshed out and detailed, with so much potential.
