‘Twilight’ Reboot TV Series In The Works At Lionsgate

Glittery vampires are back! The inevitable news is here that Lionsgate is in very early development on a Twilight television series reboot, jolting back to life the franchise that gave rise to the careers of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Whatever happened to them?

According to THR, veteran TV writer Sinead Daly (Raised by Wolves) is involved in bringing back Twilight, although details on the approach are scarce as plans have not yet taken shape and the series has no home yet. It’s unclear if Daly will be showrunner or some other creative role. Author Stephanie Meyer may also be involved.

Twilight is based on Meyer’s book franchise that centered on the love triangle between Bella, a teenage human girl; Edward, a long-lived but young-looking vampire who is totally obsessed with her; and Jacob, a beefy dude who is actually a werewolf.

The movies were adapted in 2008 and ran for five movies, concluding with 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Combined, the franchise earned Lionsgate over $3.3B and it’s just surprising they waited this long to revive it.

Lionsgate has also rejuvenated another blockbuster YA franchise with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The common denominator is Lionsgate rebooting their two most successful brands minus the expensive A-list stars. As long as audiences prove they’re willing to pay to see these universes continue, they’ll keep sticking around.
