For good reason, Illumination Studios likes to remind you of their resume, which includes the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, The Secret Life of Pets, The Grinch, Sing, and the newly-released Super Mario Bros. Movie. Basically, when they drop a new animated film it’s likely to be a smash, and that bodes well for their next one, Migration.
As seen in the trailer, Migration centers on a plucky family of ducks about to make the long flight to warmer weather. The aerial scenes really do look gorgeous, but soon the fluffy clouds and bright fall colors give way to a treacherous downpour that grounds them until they are startled by the arrival of a fine feathered interloper.
The film is directed by Benjamin Renner, who previously helmed the 2012 Oscar nominee Ernest & Celestine. But what’s most interesting is that Mike White, creator of HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, penned the script.
Migration opens in theaters this Christmas, which certainly shows that Illumination has the utmost confidence in it.
