Box Office: ‘Super Mario’ Levels Up With $678M Worldwide

  1. The Super Mario Bros Movie– $87M/$347.8M

There was no stopping The Super Mario Bros Movie in its second weekend, as it earned an estimated $87M domestic and $94M internationally for a worldwide haul of $677.9M, easily taking the title of highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

2. The Pope’s Exorcist (review)- $9.1M

Russell Crowe couldn’t exorcise the box office demon that was Super Mario. The Pope’s Exorcist, which stars Crowe as a fictionalized version of the real-life Father Amorth, was a distant second with just $9.1M. Sony/Screen Gems have clear franchise designs so these low numbers are hardly a blessing.

3. John Wick: Chapter 4– $7.9M/$160.1M

At $349M worldwide, John Wick: Chapter 4 is the highest earner of the franchise, surpassing John Wick 3‘s $328M.

4. Renfield (review)- $7.77M

Not even the promise of Nicolas Cage as Dracula could lure audiences to see Renfield. The horror comedy that features Nicholas Hoult as a super-powered version of Dracula’s loyal manservant, and Awkwafina as a justice-seeking cop, only took in $7.7M domestic and $10M overall. This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. The promise of pure unbridled Cage madness in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent didn’t produce much results, either.

5. Air– $7.72M/$33.2M

6. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves– $7.3M/$74M

Am I crazy, or is the combined $157M total for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves not a great number considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews?

7. Suzume – $2.8M

Sony’s Crunchyroll release of anime Suzume opened at $2.8M in a robust 2100 theaters. The film is already a massive international hit with $261M, keeping up the hot streak of director Makoto Shinkai, whose previous films Your Name ($382M) and Weathering with You ($162M) won audiences in the East and West.

8. Mafia Mamma (review)- $2M

Mob comedy Mafia Mamma, which stars Toni Collette as an American woman who unexpectedly is thrust to head of the family crime business, opened with just $2M.

9. Scream VI– $1.4M/$106.7M

10. Nefarious– $1.3M
