Jake Gyllenhaal is going back to war, but this time he’ll have a lot more to do than he did in Jarhead. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, formerly-titled The Interpreter, stars Gyllenhaal as US Army Sergeant John Kinley, who is saved from certain death by his Afghan interpreter. Kinley must then repay the favor by entering the war zone and helping his interpreter and his family get to safety before they are discovered by Taliban forces.
The film pairs Gyllenhaal with A War and Curveball actor Dar Salim, along with Heels actor Alexander Ludwig and The Boys‘ Antony Starr. Ritchie co-wrote the script with frequent collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.
This is just one of the numerous projects on the way from Ritchie, who also has Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre coming later this year. He’ll next shoot The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and there’s a TV series version of The Gentlemen that he’s filming. And that’s not including his Disney work on a new live-action Hercules movie, as well as a sequel to Aladdin.
The Covenant opens in theaters on April 21st.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Afghan interpreter Ahmed (Dar Salim). After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley’s life. When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first.
