So the hierarchy of power has indeed changed at DC, but not like Dwayne Johnson thought. The arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran has been like an earthquake, with Henry Cavill out, Wonder Woman 3 on the skids, and Jason Momoa possibly doing something different. But what about the four DC films hitting theaters in 2023? Are they already dead in the water? What does it bode for Shazam! Fury of the Gods?
Whether this is a continued franchise or not we’ll have to wait and see. But at least the sequel looks just as much fun as the first. Zachary Levi returns as Shazam, the mystically-powered superhero who is really the alter ego of young Billy Batson, played once again by Asher Angel. Jack Dylan Grazer returns as Freddy Freeman, with Meagan Good, Adam Brody, DJ Cotrona, Ross Butler, Grace Caroline Currey, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, and Marta Milans returning as the rest of Batson’s adoptive family. Djimon Hounsou returns as the powerful wizard Shazam, last seen in Black Adam.
The footage gives us our best look at Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as Hespera and Kalypso, villainous daughters of Atlas. West Side Story‘s Rachel Zegler plays the third sister, Anthea, who doesn’t look to be as evil as her siblings.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens March 17th.
