In 2014, Scarlett Johansson starred in Lucy, a sci-fi action flick directed by Luc Besson. The film was an unexpected smash, earning $463M worldwide. Somehow, it never led to a sequel, but it turns out we’re getting more Lucy after all…only as a TV series starring Morgan Freeman.

Variety reports that a Lucy TV series spinoff is in the works, with Freeman in talks to reprise his role from the movie. For those who may have forgotten, and who could blame you, Lucy centered on a woman who gains superhuman psychokinetic powers after a drug overdose. Instead of being able to use 10% of her brain power like average people, she’s able to unlock her full potential.
Freeman played Professor Samuel Norman, whose expertise was key to Lucy finding out about her abilities.
It’s safe to say this new Lucy series won’t be centered on Freeman’s character, and that a new actress will be found as the lead.
Besson’s EuropaCorp and Village Roadshow are behind the project. It’s no surprise EuropaCorp wants more Lucy, as it is literally the last hit movie they had. In fact, they went into bankruptcy and were acquired by Vine in 2019. It’s unclear if Besson will be involved. He had sexual assault allegations against him that were ultimately dropped, and he’s currently shooting DogMan starring Caleb Landry Jones. But because of the financial problems, it makes sense that EuropaCorp would be looking to capitalize on one of its most recognizable brands. Don’t be surprised if there’s an announcement about new Taken and Transporter projects, too.
