Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ Trailer Brings The Classic Fairy Tale To Life In Stop-Motion

While Disney released a Pinocchio movie only recently that sorta died on the vine, let’s be honest, a Guillermo Del Toro version of the classic fairy tale promises to be completely different. For one thing, Del Toro’s take on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 story is in gorgeous and difficult to produce stop-motion animation, with help from a master of the craft, co-director Mark Gustafson of Fantastic Mr. Fox fame.

The story is a familiar one. Everybody knows the story of the wooden boy who hopes to become real, but perhaps there aren’t as many who have seen just how dark it originally was. Del Toro is bringing that aspect back, as you can see in the newly-released trailer. It looks like the Pinocchio we would hope to see from Del Toro.

Gregory Mann lends his voice to the title role, with Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, David Bradley as Gepetto, plus Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Burn Gorman, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro, and Cate Blanchett.

Pinocchio debuts on Netflix on December 9th.
