‘Spawn’ Reboot Adds ‘Joker’ And ‘Captain America 4’ Writers As Todd McFarlane Takes A Step Back

In what should be a surprise to absolutely nobody, Todd McFarlane’s low-budget, gritty, R-rated Spawn movie still hasn’t happened. This is years after he loudly proclaimed that it would finally happen with him writing and directing, that latter bit is a bit odd since he’d never directed anything before. Well, the project still isn’t going anywhere, and based on this latest update it’s pretty much back to the drawing board.

According to THR, McFarlane will no longer write the Spawn movie, and has hired Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matthew Mixon to pen a new screenplay. It’s also looking like McFarlane could drop out of directing, as well, which makes sense with an entirely different group of writers aboard.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane said. “The answer is, ‘Of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

He’s not kidding when he calls them A-listers. Silver is known for co-writing Joker, as well as the upcoming sequel. Spellman wrote Falcon and the Winter Soldier and has Captain America: New World Order coming up.

Blumhouse has given up on Spawn yet, either, and Jamie Foxx continues to wait to suit up for the title role. But how long can that last when the film is back at square one?
