It’s a big deal to become part of the stable of bullpen writers at Marvel Comics, and we see how that is also the case at Marvel Studios. Where guys like Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus could be entrusted with the biggest, most crucial projects in previous phases, it seems that role has now fallen to Michael Waldron. The Loki writer recently penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now he’s just been hired for what could be the most important MCU project yet.
Deadline reports that Waldron will write Avengers: Secret Wars, arriving in November 2025 as the final movie of Phase 6. While details are unknown, we do know that Secret Wars has frequently been used in the comics to describe heroic battles against a seemingly unstoppable cosmic threat in an alternate universe, usually Battleworld. The original 1984-1985 crossover event involved an alien being known as The Beyonder. A recent storyline in 2015 involved an attempt to save the entire Multiverse.
Interestingly, the Secret Wars film is only months ahead of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which already has Destin Daniel Cretton aboard to direct, and Jeff Loveness on the script. We can probably guess that a director announcement will be coming soon. Some of the rumors out there name Ryan Coogler as the top contender, but he might want a break after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
As for Waldron, he’s also attached to Kevin Feige’s untitled Star Wars movie. It’s good to make friends.
