‘Emily’ Trailer: Emma Mackey Is Rebel Misfit Genius Author Emily Brontë In Frances O’Connor’s Directing Debut

“Emily, how did you write ‘Wuthering Heights?

That’s the question posed to the “Rebel, Misfit, and Genius” Emily Brontë in the new trailer for Emily, starring Death On the Nile‘s Emma Mackey as the influential author who died too young. The film is a fictional account of her life and the exhilarating journey into her womanhood that led to the writing of Wuthering Heights.

Other members of the Brontë literary family are portrayed by Fionn Whitehead as her brother, Branwell, Amelia Gething as youngest sister Anne, and Alexandra Dowling as the eldest sister, Charlotte. Also in the cast are Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Emily’s first love, Weightman, plus Gemma Jones and Adrian Dunbar.

The film marks the directorial debut of The Importance of Being Earnest actress Frances O’Connor, working from her own screenplay.  This is the sort of romantic piece that helped make O’Connor’s career and it’s no surprise she has an affinity for it.

Emily has yet to gain a U.S. release date but will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
