Released in 2017, The Villainess was a brutal, off-the-wall, topsy-turvy revenge flick that I really dug. South Korean filmmaker Jung Byung-gil pulled out all of the stops to bring viewers a bit of Hardcore Henry meets Lady Vengeance insanity. And now he’s back with a film that looks like it’ll be even wilder. Carter looks like it’ll be part Jason Bourne, part The Last of Us, part The Raid all rolled into one. Yes friggin’ please!
Starring Joo Won, Carter centers on a man with no memory who is told via an earpiece that he must take on a critical mission to rescue a girl who holds the key to saving all of humanity from a viral apocalypse. Oh, and there are others hot on his trail, guaranteeing the body count is going to get VERY high.
So I’m digging all of this. I’m not sure it’s quite on the scale of RRR, but this is definitely more up my alley. Carter hits Netflix on August 5th.
Two months into a deadly pandemic originating from the DMZ that has devastated the US and North Korea, “Carter” awakens, with no recollections of his past. In his head is a mysterious device, and in his mouth, a lethal bomb. A strange voice in his ears gives him orders. The bomb may go off at any time — unless he rescues the girl who is the sole antidote to the virus. But the CIA and a North Korean coup are hot on his heels.
