Let’s be perfectly blunt about George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. It doesn’t matter how good this epic romance starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton is. It will only be seen as the movie that held Miller up from doing a followup to Mad Max: Fury Road. How dare he put something ahead of that!?!?!?
Seriously, it’s been seven years since Fury Road, a movie many see as one of the greatest action flicks of all-time and I’d be hard-pressed to disagree. Three Thousand Years of Longing is the movie he needed to get off his chest before tackling Furiosa, and it’s a fantasy romance rooted in myth and folklore.
Here’s the synopsis: “A lonely and bitter British woman discovers an ancient bottle while on a trip to Istanbul and unleashes a Djinn who offers her three wishes. Filled with apathy, she is unable to come up with one until his stories spark in her a desire to be loved.”
Three Thousand Years of Longing will have its world premiere at Cannes later this month, then open in theaters on August 31st.
