‘Benediction’ Trailer: Terence Davies Returns With A Biopic On WWI Poet Siegfried Sassoon

English filmmaker Terence Davies will probably never be a household name, but among cinephiles his resume is incredibly impressive. The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea director is back with Benediction, his first movie since 2016’s A Quiet Passion. The biographical drama stars Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi as revered WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon in different stages of his life.

The film centers on Sassoon, whose beautiful, moving words helped others during the First World War, while inside he was forced to hide the secret of his homosexuality. Also in the cast are Simon Russell Beale, Jeremy Irvine, Kate Phillips, Gemma Jones, Ben Daniels, Calam Lynch, and Julian Sands.

Reviews out of last year’s TIFF praised Davies as well as his lead actors. I’m actually surprised this isn’t being held until later in the year closer to awards season. But for now, Benediction opens in theaters on June 3rd.
