- The Lost City (Review) – $31M
While $31M isn’t setting the world on fire, I have to admit I’m still surprised by this decent box office take. When the trailer hit, and a cast including Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and Brad Pitt were announced I couldn’t help but to think, “Was this supposed to come out 10 years ago?”. Alas, when you get the talented people to do what they do best, the fans will come. Also, can we be honest a sec? The action-adventure Rom-Com is a seriously underused sub-genre.
2. The Batman – $20.5M/$331.9M
3. RRR – $9.5M
This is wonderful news for the globalization of cinema. I had to check a few times to make sure I had the domestic box office when I saw this India-made film was released on 1200 screens and took third place at the box office. There is some truly great work being done outside of Hollywood and the proliferation of streaming options is getting more people comfortable with the idea of foreign cinema.
4. Uncharted – $5M/$133.5M
5. Jujutsu Kaisen 0:The Movie – $4.5M/$27.7M
6. X – $2.2M/$8.2M
7. Dog – $2.1M/$57.8M
8. Spider-Man: No Way Home – $2M/$800.5M
9. Sing 2 – $1.2M/160.2M
10. Infinite Storm – $751K
Rounding out the top 10 this week is Infinite Storm the last new release in the list. We’re two years into COVID and I still can’t get used to seeing sub-$1M box office takes. This Naomi Watts led thriller has made yet another good case for the direct to streaming release philosophy.
