Matthew Vaughn Wants More ‘The King’s Man’ Prequels, Won’t Commit To Directing ‘Kingsman 3’

Has anyone even noticed that The King’s Man is in theaters now? I’ll be very curious to see how that does at the box office this weekend, swamped by Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Resurrections. Anyway, it’s the third of Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman series, but this one is a prequel set around WWI. But where does that leave a proper sequel? And will Vaughn get back behind the camera for it?

Speaking with TheWrap, Vaughn wouldn’t commit to directing Kingsman 3, which he’s said would end the story of Taron Egerton’s young super-spy, Eggsy.

“I haven’t decided. Are you asking me whether I want to direct right now when I’m just finishing ‘Argyle’ off, literally today, as well … Not the time to ask someone whether they want to direct or not. At the moment, I don’t know. I mean, yeah. Give me a couple of months. Maybe.”

The “Argylle” Vaughn refers to is a non-Kingsman spy movie starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell. So yeah, it’s going to be a pretty big deal.

As for The King’s Man, Vaughn hopes to do more prequels just like it. His idea would be similar to what he started with X-Men: First Class, with each film set in a different decade.

“If people like this one, I think, that’d be fascinating to go through every decade – the history of espionage, how it changed. I’ll be sort of fast-forwarding as quickly as I can to get into the ‘60s to start doing the Cold War…Imagine a scene where you’re in the Kingsman tailor shop and you’ve got the Beatles on Savile Row playing. It’d be amazing to go through British history through the eyes of the Kingsman.”

The King’s Man is in theaters now.
