This holiday season, Netflix is offering you the gift of an origin story for ol’ St. Nick. A Boy Called Christmas centers on a boy named Nicolas (Hmmmm!) who ventures off in search of his father and to see if there’s any magic left out there in the world, only to discover the true meaning of Christmas.
The film is directed by Gil Kenan, best known for Monster House, City of Ember, and Poltergeist. An interesting filmography, but one that largely focuses on otherworldly stories involving kids, such as his co-writing credit on Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The script is co-written by Ol Parker, whose work on The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Mamma Mia 2 seems an odd fit.
Starring Henry Lawfull, Toby Jones, Sally Hawkins, Kristen Wiig, Michiel Huisman, Zoe Colletti, Stephen Merchant, Jim Broadbent, and Maggie Smith, A Boy Called Christmas opens November 18th internationally, while Netflix has the rights elsewhere. Presumably, they’ll be the ones to release it here in the States.
