Rodriguez and Skydance Aim To Reboot ‘Spy Kids’

For me, Robert Rodriguez will also bring to mind images of El Mariachi, Sin City or some similar ultra-violent, decidedly adult piece of cinema. To this point, it’s hard for me to come to terms with the later career success Rodriguez has had in the family friendly category. Spy Kids, his first kid’s franchise was a huge success, spawning multiple sequels and becoming the introduction to action films for a whole generation of kids. Next he had the Sharkboy and Lavagirl series, which is still producing spin-offs and sequels (this month’s hit streamer We Can Be Heroes currently on Netflix). It’s time to get back to basics according to Skydance entertainment who has, smartly, started the process of rebooting the franchise with the help of Rodriguez himself. If you’re going to redo something for the next generation it’s always best to bring the original power behind the film to the table. Because alliteration is important in Hollywood Skydance has brought on Spyglass entertainment to executive produce. While there’s no word on timelines or where the film will release, I think it’s a safe bet to say that this flick will land on a streamer for it’s premier. One thing has become clear, streaming has become a safe haven for the types of movies that were dying off in theaters, mainly mid-level action films and these fun family flicks!
