Other than the first couple of Venom movies, Sony’s Spider-Verse of live-action Marvel movies were pretty terrible. It would be one thing if they just sucked, but they couldn’t make money either, with Morbius, Madame Web, and the sad finale Kraven the Hunter becoming punchlines. But this is still Marvel and Spider-Man is wildly popular, so Sony is going to give it another shot. Yep, a reboot.
Sony CEO Tom Rothman told The Town podcast that plans are underway to reboot the Marvel Spider-Verse of movies. Rothman didn’t go into detail, but he did say the intention is to “go back” to Morbius, Kraven, and those characters again in a fresh reboot with new actors.
Here’s the thing: nobody should be surprised by this. Sony needs to keep making these movies if it wants to maintain the rights. Sure, fans would love to see these characters return to Marvel Studios to become part of the MCU proper, but that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, if ever.
If Sony is going to do this, though, it needs to be well-planned and overseen by a singular voice. The previous movies were just sorta slapped together and aimless, which is a terrible plan when dealing with D-level Marvel antiheroes. There are more popular characters in Spidey’s world to pick from and Sony would be wise to focus on them. Maybe make a movie about a hero, for instance, rather than a Spidey villain?
