Eddie Redmayne To Star In Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Next English-Language Film

Longtime readers already know Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda is a personal favorite, and has been since 2004’s Nobody Knows. I’m not alone, and for all of us Kore-eda fans out there, 2026 is shaping up to be pretty great as he has two films, Sheep in the Box and live-action anime remake Look Back, arriving this year. But that’s not all, as Deadline has news on an English-language film set up at Searchlight Pictures that will star Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne.

Kore-eda will direct Redmayne in an untitled English-language film, his first not in his native Japanese since 2018’s French drama The Truth and Korean drama Broker in 2022. Plot details are unknown, but the script will also be written by Kore-eda.

Since the collapse of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Redmayne’s big screen workload has been minimal. Most recently he starred in the acclaimed series The Day of the Jackal, earning Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice nominations for his performance. Coming up later this year for Redmayne is Panic Carefully alongside Julia Roberts.

Kore-eda’s credits include the 2018 Palme d’Or winner, Shoplifters, which also received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film. His most recent film, Monster, was released in 2023.
