Some would say that Josh O’Connor is on the verge of becoming a true Hollywood leading man. But I would say he’s already there, following the success of Challengers last year, and the roles he’s booked since. While O’Connor is going to be more in-demand than ever, it seems he’ll always keep at least one foot in the world of indie cinema. Case in point, his role in Kelly Reichardt’s anticipated heist movie, The Mastermind.
MUBI has dropped a new trailer for The Mastermind, which will screen next at the New York Film Festival before hitting theaters on October 17th. Its world premiere was held earlier this year at Cannes, where it received positive reviews.
Written and directed by Reichardt, the film stars O’Connor as a suburban dad in the 1970s leading a double life as an art thief.
Also in the cast are Alana Haim, Gaby Hoffman, John Magaro, Hope Davis, Rhenzy Feliz, and Bill Camp.
SYNOPSIS: In a sedate corner of Massachusetts circa 1970, JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief, plans his first big heist. When things go haywire, his life unravels.
Coming up for O’Connor are the Sundance drama Rebuilding, which was acquired by Bleecker Street. Next month he’ll star with Paul Mescal in The History of Sound, followed by Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man this December, and Steven Spielberg’s summer 2026 blockbuster.
