Holy crap, what took so long? A Sundance favorite from a couple of years ago, Andrew Durham’s coming-of-age drama Fairyland is finally set to hit theaters in October. The film stars CODA breakout Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy, and it wouldn’t be a shock if it made some waves this awards season once more people see it.
Set in the 1970s, Fairyland follows a young woman as she navigates a turbulent relationship with her father after the death of her mother, a sudden move to San Francisco, and her father’s coming out as gay. Durham wrote and directed the film in his feature debut, adapting Alysia Abbott’s memoir.
Sofia Coppola is among the film’s producers and for good reason. The gentle tone and humor are very much in her style.
Also in the cast are Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, Adam Lambert, Geena Davis, and Nessa Dougherty.
SYNOPSIS: Produced by Oscar® winner Sofia Coppola and based on the acclaimed memoir of the same name by Alysia Abbott, “Fairyland” is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene in the 1970s and ’80s. This captivating film chronicles a father-daughter relationship as it evolves through an era of bohemian decadence to the sober and heartbreaking era of the AIDS crisis.
Fairyland opens in theaters on October 10th from Lionsgate and Willa. You can find our early review here.
