It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Netflix’s live-action Dragon’s Lair movie, based on the classic 1980s video game that revolutionized arcades with its cartoon graphics and smooth cinematic style. Announced back in 2020, the film now may have a director as THR confirms The InSneider‘s report that James Bobin is in talks for the job.
Bobin, best known for directing The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, is nearing a deal to direct Netflix’s Dragon’s Lair movie. Ryan Reynolds had been attached to produce and star as the bumbling knight, Dirk the Daring. In the years since, he has dropped out of the lead role but remains aboard as producer.
Also producing is animation legend Don Bluth, whose visuals powered Dragon’s Lair to become one of the most popular arcade games of the ’80s. Bluth is also known for his iconic films such as The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Anastasia, and The Land Before Time.
Dragon’s Lair is a comedic fantasy adventure centering on Dirk the Daring, who clumsily embarks on a quest to save the beautiful Princess Daphne from the dragon Singe and the evil wizard Mordroc.
Mixing humor and adventure is what Bobin does best, so this seems like the right fit. Critical will be who is cast as Dirk the Daring, and with Reynolds out of the mix it’ll be interesting to see who steps in.
