Video game movies are everywhere right now, and Capcom is striking while the iron is hot with a new Resident Evil reboot. Taking on his first franchise is Barbarian director Zach Cregger, and now it appears he’s found one of his male leads. Deadline reports Austin Abrams is in talks for a lead in the survival horror adaptation.
Abrams is best known for his role on HBO’s Euphoria, and most recently Wolfs opposite Brad Pitt and George Clooney. I would also point you to his incredible performance in The Line, which was one of the best I saw all year. Abrams recently worked with Cregger on his upcoming film, Weapons, so this is looking like a reunion.
There’s no reporting on Abrams’ role, but it’s most likely going to be either Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield, the two major male characters in Resident Evil. The video games center on the release of the bioweapon T-Virus by the Umbrella Corporation, turning people and other creatures into zombies.
Cregger will direct and co-write the script with Shay Hatten, known for his work with Zack Snyder (Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon) and on the John Wick movies.
Sony has set Resident Evil to open on September 18th 2026.
