Two years ago I attended the premiere of Magazine Dreams. At the time, star Jonathan Majors was on top of the world, and this dark bodybuilding drama was to be the film that sent him to the awards season, possibly to the Oscars. But just two months later, Majors was arrested for domestic assault, ultimately convicted, and brought everything to a halt. Majors lost multiple upcoming projects, the ones he was a part of didn’t perform as well as expected, too. As for Magazine Dreams, it was put on the shelf and struggled to find a distributor.
This week Magazine Dreams finally opened in theaters (review here)courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment. The film stars Majors as Killian Maddox, a rageful, antisocial aspiring bodybuilding champion consumed with achieving his American Dream.
I had the chance to spend a few minutes talking with Jonathan Majors about Magazine Dreams. For me, Majors is a supremely talented actor and his work on the film remains extraordinary. Whatever one thinks of what Majors did in the past, his performance can’t simply be brushed aside and ignored.
It seemed to me that my attitude is what Majors hopes to get from everyone else. He remains incredibly confident and proud of the work he did on Magazine Dreams, saying that even after two years the moment is still right for the film’s arrival. He also went in depth on his preparation for such a physically demanding role and violent role.
