Released in 2002, 28 Days Later is one of those films that helped reinvigorate the zombie horror, even though it doesn’t have any actual zombies in it. Instead it’s the deadly rage virus, which turns the infected into aggressive, fast-moving predators. The outbreak continued with 2007’s quasi-sequel 28 Weeks Later, and now finally the trailer for the long-awaited 28 Years Later is here. And you know what? It has a lot more Teletubbies than I think anyone was expecting.
The notoriously annoying Teletubbies are seen on television, clearly a distraction for the kiddies while disaster rages outside. It’s a scene that goes back to day one of the outbreak before fast-forwarding thousands of days to the present where only a small group of human survivors remain.
Danny Boyle returns to direct 28 Years Later, once again joined by screenwriter Alex Garland. We do see quite a bit of stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, but nothing of recent Oscar winner Cillian Murphy who is expected to reprise his role as Jim. It’s possible a very emaciated “zombie” is him, but as of right now that’s uncertain. It does kind of look like Murphy, though. Also in the cast are Erin Kellyman, Alfie Williams, and Jack O’Connell.
Here’s the synopsis: It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.
28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20th 2025 and is the first in a new trilogy. It shot back-to-back with the next film, 28 Years Later II: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta.
