- Moana 2 (review)- $135.5M/$221M
Disney’s Moana 2 sailed right through lousy critical reviews and into the record books on the highest-earning Thanksgiving weekend ever. The sequel exceeded expectations on its way to a $135.5M 3-Day weekend, and $221M across the 5-day Thanksgiving holiday, both the largest ever. Overseas things were just as good with another $165M for a whopping $386M global haul. With these numbers, Moana 2 should easily surpass the $687M of the 2016 movie’s entire run. Disney CEO Bob Iger made the smart move in pulling this as a Disney+ streaming service and into a theatrical blockbuster. The shareholders must be pleased.
2. Wicked– $80M/$262.4M
I’m going to make a prediction: Next week, Wicked will leapfrog past Moana 2 and back into the top spot. With just a 28% drop, Wicked continues to be magic for audiences and Universal Pictures. The film added another $80M domestically and continues to build internationally for a global total of $359M.
3. Gladiator II– $30.7M/$111.2M
The third of this three-headed box office monster, Gladiator II, also performed extremely well. Dropping just 44% in its second week, Ridley Scott’s Roman epic has $111M domestically but an impressive $320M worldwide.
4. Red One– $12.8M/$76M
While it’s not exactly crushing it overall, the holiday season is doing Red One a lot of good. The Dwayne Johnson/Chris Evans Christmas action-comedy fell just 2.5% in its 3rd week as families continue to seek the film out. It now has $76M stateside and $148M worldwide.
5. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever– $3.2M/$32M
6. Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.– $2.4M/$9.7M
7. Venom: The Last Dance– $2.2M/$137.8M
8. Heretic– $956K/$26.8M
9. The Wild Robot– $670K/$142.4M
10. A Real Pain– $665K/$6.1M
