Released in 2022, Nikyatu Jusu’s psychological horror Nanny made a big splash on the festival circuit before earning accolades later that year. Jusu had made the most of her breakthrough, landing a gig directing a sequel to Night of the Living Dead. And it looks as if she’ll continue to be a force in the realm of horror as she’s now set to direct a new based on the Cronenberg classic, The Fly.
Deadline reports Jusu will write and direct a new version of The Fly, but this won’t be a remake. Instead, the film will take place in the same universe as David Cronenberg’s movie. No other details are available at this point.
So what does this mean exactly? Cronenberg’s The Fly was itself a remake, and followed scientist Seth Brundle, played by Jeff Goldblum, whose DNA merges with that of a fly while he’s working on a teleportation experiment. The film remains one of the greatest body horrors ever and is a continued influence on others in that genre. It’s doubtful we see Goldblum’s Seth Brundle return, but what about Geena Davis as Ronnie Quaife?
One thing is clear and it’s that Jusu is a director to keep a close eye on as she’s willing to tackle new takes on iconic movies.
